Over the past century, communication technologies that have changed the world have been evolving. One of these innovations is Twitter, the 11-year old multi-billion social media and marketing platform. Twitter began as an idea that Twitter startup co-founder Jack Dorsey had in 2006. Dorsey had originally imagined Twitter as an SMS-based communications platform that groups of friends could keep tabs on what each other were doing based on their status updates. During a brainstorming session at the podcasting company Odeo, Jack Dorsey proposed this SMS based platform to Odeo’s co-founder Evan Williams. Evan, and his co-founder Biz Stone by extension, gave Jack the go-ahead to spend more time on the project and develop it further.
Today, Twitter is not just a social media platform that friends can communicate with, it is a powerful tool that allows businesses to stay on top of trends and up to date with what the market is interested in, as well as keep the public updated on businesses’ trends and products or services. Twitter tools such as marketing campaigns, hashtags, mentions, likes and retweets, enable businesses to reach out both locally and globally to create presence and awareness, gain momentum, keep conversations, and track progress. Twitter as a social media platform makes a positive impact for individuals and businesses. Through OIIE tweets, the social media platform has helped us to gain exposure, as well as attract, interact and connect people. On an average, we earn approximately 1,200 impressions per day, 24 engagements per day, and over 100 followers every month. That means that approximately 1,200 people view our tweets every day, and 24 users interacted with our tweets. By utilizing Twitter, we have been able to and are continuing to expand our social reach. Twitter started as a startup in 2006 and is now an international social media tool .
